EV Range: How Far Can an Electric Vehicle Go?
Depending on the battery capacity of your electric vehicle (EV), you can go between 200 to 490 kilometers with one charge. Battery capacity is getting better every year and so is the charging infrastructure. If you're planning a longer trip, check for charging stations along the way. EVs get you where you need to go
We know that a lack of charging infrastructure and the electric range of the car are two of the main concerns when considering an electric vehicle. You want to make sure that you can drop off your kids at kindergarten and get to your 9:00 meeting without ending up on the side of the road with an empty battery and two crying kids in the back seat.
But don’t worry, EVs can get you where you need to go. The reality is the infrastructure of EV charging points is growing rapidly, plus you probably need less power than you think. The average person drives about 60 km each day and with one full charge you can go for example 240 km with a Renault ZOE or 490 km with a Tesla Model S.
Battery capacity improves
Meanwhile, battery capacity is getting better every year. In 2016, the Nissan LEAF's battery capacity was 30 kW, which allowed you to drive up to 200 km with one charge. Just one year later the battery capacity was 40 kW, which let you drive up to 280 km. Keep in mind that the actual range might differ, depending on factors like your driving style, extreme temperatures, and driving with a heavy load or uphill for long periods of time.
